I started with early labor at 3:30am on 6/15 - I had to pee and then there were inconsistent contractions. I was able to go back to sleep until about 6:30am. I had to pee again and experienced more contractions. Then when I got out of the bed at 7:30am, there was liquid in the bed the size of a salad plate and I was still having contractions. I called my doula, Sara, to let her know around 8am and then I called my doctor. She had just finished delivering a baby and was off. She wanted me evaluated to see if my water did break. I started to work from home until the office confirmed my appointment.
I went into the office around 9:15 to see a different doctor. She checked me and I was 2cm dilated and 100% effaced. I was experiencing consistent contractions 30 minutes apart and lasting 30-45 seconds. She checked under the microscope for amniotic fluid residue and there was none so my water didn't break. She sent me home and told me to keep my prenatal visit already scheduled for the next morning.
I went home and the contractions continued consistently. They weren't unbearable as I was able to work and lead a conference call for a few hours. My doula suggested I start drinking my electrolytes and getting in some protein. Around 1pm, I started to get tired so I went upstairs to nap. My contractions started to pickup to every 10 minutes lasting 45-60 seconds. At that time, I called Ernesto to come home.
Around 2pm, my contractions started to get closer and stronger at 7 minutes and I used the birth ball to cope. My doula suggested the shower, but Ernesto wasn't home yet (it took him forever!!) I continued on the ball until he arrived at 2:20. He brought me a protein smoothie - way to redeem himself! Then I went into the shower with my smoothie and Gatorade for 30 minutes. While in the shower, my contractions got stronger and I felt the need to poop with some of them. I asked Ernesto to call the doula to come over about 10 minutes into the shower.
Once out of the shower, I went back to laying on the ball. Then my contractions slowed and I started to get tired. My doula arrived around this time and said that was okay as it was telling my body to rest. After about 20 minutes in bed the urge to poop became very strong. My doula calmly said we should make preparations to head to the hospital. Ernesto called and texted my doctor (she was off, but was coming in to deliver my baby) and then called the office to alert them we were on our way to the hospital. It took me 20+ minutes to get out the office between contractions.
During the car ride, the urge to poop became really strong and the contractions picked up. I had to blow candles to get through the urges. We arrived at the hospital at 5:19pm and I had a major contraction in the waiting area - I think I scared all these people :) Then they took me to triage and tried to get me to put on a hospital gown and I was like I need to poop and didn't want to put on their gown as I had my own. My doula was looking for the gown and couldn't find it so we gave up and decided I would keep on my dress. There were like 5 nurses in triage and all frantically trying to get the on call doctor and check me. One nurse checked me and said she's complete and we need to move.
They didn't have a clean room immediately ready for me due to the previous 16 births that day! They finally found a room and there were nurses cleaning it so I could deliver. They rolled me down the hall on the gurney and my water broke at 5:22pm in the hallway. Once in the room, another 10 nurses joined the party! They rolled me from the gurney to the bed. Then they let me pee and I got back in bed and waited for my doctor. I told them I was hot and they said he thermostat was at 55 - no way! My doula went to get me some cold washcloths for my face, which helped a lot. The nurses were trying to give me an IV/saline lock (this was the one thing my doctor wouldn't budge on), but they couldn't get my veins to cooperate, so we proceeded on. My doctor rolled in at 5:28 and said I'm here - I was in short pump getting a facial and then was in route to take my dogs out, I had to turn around on the interstate. I was like oh a facial, at red door? She said yes and it was awesome! Why we had time to discuss this I am not sure Then she looked at me and said oh yeah you're ready let me get my booties on because we're going to have a baby! She asked Ernesto if he still wanted to catch and he said yes. She asked if he wanted gloves and he said no! Then I felt another urge to poop (ernesto likes to remind me that I kept saying I need to poop a million times) and she said go with it ( keep in mind there was lots of poop between triage and now) and with the next contraction I want you to push until 10. So that's what I did and they all cheered me on and then she said breathe through the next one and I did. Then she said ok with this next one we will count to 10 again and Alice will be here. With the next contraction I pushed with all my might and there was Alice on my tummy courtesy of Ernesto - the doula took photos of all this and they are soooo cool!! So after 4 hours of active labor at home/car and 25 minutes at the hospital (including the 16 minutes of pushing), Alice arrived!
Miss Alice Olivia was born on Monday, June 15th at 5:44pm. She weighed 6.12 lbs and measured 18 1/2 inches.
